Biodiversity Ireland Species Profile: Speckled Wood Butterfly

This brown Butterfly can be seen now. It has eight black eye spots with white centres, surrounded by yellow circles; creamy blotches on its wings. Female lays eggs on meadow grasses such as Cock’s foot and Yorkshire fog. Watch out for it today flying around hedgerows, field margins, parks and gardens. Larvae or caterpillars become dormant for a period in winter. Important that Councils leave road edges uncut because all the brown butterflies lay their eggs on wild grasses.
