Wildflowers of Ireland Profile: | Marsh Woundwort |
Marsh Woundwort flowers from June through to early Autumn, adding an occasional injection of purple-pink among the wilflowers. It is found commonly around Ireland, but mostly in wet areas like our canal banks. It can appear in damp woodlands, or damp corners of fields and gardens and so on, too.
Marsh Woundwort is popular as a nectar source with bees, butterflies and other insects yet it doesn’t have much scent. The little markings on the individual flowers are a good example of the nectar guides that direct the bees and other pollinators to the centre for their reward.
There are several different species of Woundwort and as the name suggests they would have been used as medicinal herbs to promote healing.
