Ringlet Butterfly

Fáinneog

Irish name: Fáinneog
See it in: Summer
Biodiversity Ireland Species Profile: Ringlet Butterfly

One of our 8 species of brown butterflies. Likes places with tall grasses because the female lays eggs at the bases of these grasses. The caterpillars eat the grass blades. Dark brown in colour, it has distinguishing eye spots on the forewings and hind wings. I took this photograph yesterday morning (10th May 2023) on the Castlewarden road near the crossroads.
