Wildflowers of Ireland Profile: | Hedge Bindweed |
Hedge bindweed (Ialus fáil) can be seen scrambling through hedgerows now. The beautiful trumpet-shaped flowers range from 3-7cm in diameter. Many insects are attracted to these flowers, including hawkmoths. Though native, in gardens, it is often considered a very invasive weed because they spread by thick, white, creeping rhizomes underground. If these are broken by digging, new plants are produced. The leaves are arrow-shaped. The plant’s wiry stems twist around nearby plants, often smothering them. Photo taken today 11/07/23 at Castlewarden cross-roads.
